This is a Japanese technique. Arashi means “storm”. Many of the original diagonal patterns from Japan suggest rain driven by strong wind.
The undyed fabric is first wrapped onto a cylinder with string. PVC plastic pipes of various diameters are most commonly used.Then the fabric is compressed into folds by pushing straight down or using a twisting movement.
After the fabric is pre-soaked in water, and towel dried, the dyes are applied by hand-painting the colours directly onto the pole or vat dyed.
